Aesop has an innate knack of always getting it right. From its well-squeezed tubes of body balm to its cult hand wash, no sink top or vanity is complete without an amber bottle of some kind. And today, with the sun in our eyes and sand between our toes, the brand adds to its stylish, efficacious stable with a new sun-smart product: Aesop Protective Facial Lotion SPF25.
In this Great Southern Land, we are well-versed in the language of sun protection. With the slip, slop, slap rhetoric entrenched since childhood, a form of SPF accompanies any and every trip to the beach (and just out the door, for that matter). Offering broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays, the new moisturiser-SPF hybrid acts as both a shield to the damaging effects of sun exposure and and its after-effects, namely dehydration and free radical damage. The hydrating daily lotion is charged full of anti-oxidants, including Green Tea and Tocopherol (Vitamin E), plus skin-soothing Panthenol, which works in concert with light yet nourishing emollients Coco-Caprylate and Squalane to hydrate and soften the skin.
This clever concerto of mighty ingredients works to fight free radical damage, something which Dr Kate Forbes, Aesop’s General Manager of Products and Research & Development, observes as one of the key stressors on our skin. “The skin can become stressed by a number of environmental aggressors, including UVA and UVB rays, resulting in the proliferation of free radicals which can impact our skin,” says Dr Forbes. “Topical application of anti-oxidants alongside UV filters in sunscreen is a crucial factor in helping to protect the skin. When free radicals occur in greater numbers, oxidative stress results. Protective Facial Lotion SPF25 contains skin-fortifying anti-oxidants and UV protective ingredients to help the skin function optimally in any environment.”
As you’d imagine, it smells beautiful and woody and herbaceous, just like the iconic yet indiscernible waft of any given Aesop boutique – but softer. At first pump, it’s rich and creamy. But when smoothed into the skin, it’s beautifully fluid and sheer and emollient, just like a second skin. This second-skin finish makes it the perfect cream for any hot climate; light, breathable and weightless in texture, it sinks into the skin rather than coagulating on top (particularly pertinent for when the sun beats down). Massage from forehead to neck with a generous dollop 20 minutes before sun exposure, and reapply every two hours onwards for the ultimate UV protection and hydration.
