Hollywood veteran Glenn Close arrived at the 91st Academy Awards dressed as the award she hopes to win. In a floor-length Carolina Herrera, the 71-year-old is the favourite to take home the Best Actress award tonight for her role in The Wife, an independent film about a woman devoted to her Nobel Prize winning husband. It explores what she compromised for her relationship as the dutiful guardian of her husband’s brand and is said to be the performance of Close’s four-decade career.

Close is up against Yalitza Aparicio (Roma), Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born), Olivia Colman (The Favourite) and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?).

The actress has won every single award this season including a Golden Globe and tying first for a Critics Choice Award with  Gaga. In her acceptance speech for the latter, she talked about her own mother who sadly told her daughter in her 80s that she “felt like she hadn’t accomplished anything. “It was so not right,” Close said.

“I feel what I’ve learned from this whole experience is that women, we’re nurturers and that’s what’s expected of us. We have our children and husbands if we’re lucky enough…. but we have to find personal fulfilment. We have to follow our dreams, we have to say, ‘I can do that,’ and ‘I should be allowed to do that.’”

If you’re in Australia, the ceremony will begin at 12 noon (AEST) today on Monday February 25. Channel Nine have again secured the rights to the show. If you’re at work or in transit, you can stream the ceremony live online at 9Now. Click here.
