It may have been cold outside, but we were quickly transported to Spring in Paris at Lee Matthews, with a refined and rosy beauty look by Guerlain.

The iconic French brand brought a little Paris to the faces of the model fleet, as idiosyncratic imperfections were celebrated and Matthews ethos of sustainability was echoed in the makeup sentiments.  Led by makeup director, Claire Thompson, the makeup mantra was a clear one; fresh, French and ethereal. A dewy complexion came down to good skincare; the focus was on clear, radiant skin as oppose to a slew of coverage products, just a touch of Guerlain Abeille Royale Bee Glow Moisturiser Guerlain Precious Light Illuminator in Medium was added to give a youthful glow and a measured dab of concealer only where needed. “There is a concealer, there is a bit of powder, you don’t have to be bared faced; you can still give yourself coverage,” Thompson said backstage.

But the true star was a Guerlain icon – the Rouge G lipstick – reimagined for the modern woman. The entire look was a kind of beauty homage to the lipstick – with Thompson devising this French girl beauty around it. “We are working with the most amazing lipstick ever, and it’s not just a lipstick, it’s a balm, too. It gives you a little bit more colour.” The lipstick, as it were, was not just used on lips, but worked around the face. “We’ve also worked the lipstick into the cheeks, so all the areas the sun naturally hits, it’s warming up the skin. Even across the bridge of the nose, where the sun would be hitting.” A masterful trick, gently buffing lipstick around the nose is one Thompson says will give you the ultimate “sun-kissed” look as oppose to looking too doll-like. “When you bring lipstick onto the nose as well, it stops it making it looking like a doll. It is more of that sun-kissed look than doll look. I feel that was really important because the Lee Matthews customer is a woman.”

That Lee Matthews woman was the makeup muse for Thompson, and the collection itself. “There’s a lot of travel and movement involved in Lee’s clothes and I think this is something you can actually do on the run. I feel like, when I was speaking to a lot of my male friends, many of them were transfixed with watching girls putting lipstick on their cheeks, putting it on their lips. There’s an essentialness to it. It is actually quite special.”
