While there’s almost no cut-through on any social media platform of any news today other than Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Royal engagement, the Australian media have turned their focus to a different Harry; one Gucci-clad and just as dreamy. Harry Styles hit Australia for his sold-out smaller shows (before of course he returns in 2018 for a stadium tour) and performed at the ARIAs.
And it’s no easy feat. The country’s leading journalists are in the audience and are a little wary of an ex-boy-band member. Nevertheless after his self-titled album hit number one across the world, Styles proved his rock and psychedelic pop will see him through to warrant the “real deal” label, even among the most sceptical. Some (us included) might even say longstanding. While accepting the award for Best International Act presented by Rebel Wilson, Ruby Rose and Pitch Perfect 3 co-stars Anna Camp and Brittany Snow, he congratulated our country on voting yes to marriage equality, a law which was legalised in his homeland of England in 2014.
“Every time I’ve ever been in Australia for the last several years, everyone has always been so wonderful to me so thank you so much for having me and having me back,” he began, his English accent thick, his suit a purple Gucci version of the blue one featured in new music video Kiwi. “And congratulations on your recent political decision. I obviously wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the fans so thank you. And thank you to my label [Sony Music] and I love you all, thank you so much.”
