TV Land has officially picked up a reboot series of the 1988 cult classic Heathers. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the black comedy remake will not be set in the 80s, but rather in the present day with some big changes to the iconic Heather gang.

Set to be directed by Leslye Headland in a single camera fashion and written by Jason Micallef, the iconic mean girl trio will no longer be the classic trope of tall and beautiful teenagers so often used in other cult classics like Mean Girls or Jawbreaker.

Instead, the vicious gang will consist of, as so bluntly announced by TV Land; a black lesbian, a male who identifies as a gender-queer whose real name is Heath, and a Heather with a body like Martha Dumptruck (the unlucky nickname given to a character from the original movie).

Besides these character descriptions, there’s not much more information about the remake, but it definitely seems like the production team are wanting to push boundaries the same way the original film did, with Leslye stating “The movie was a huge influence on an entire generation and it’ll be nice to introduce this to a new generation.”

There’s no word yet on who will take any of these roles, or if the characters Veronica, originally played by Winona Ryder and J.D, played by Christian Slater, will return with their turbulent titular relationship.

With a Cruel Intentions remake also along the way, it seems all our favourite dark teen dramas are making a comeback. The real question is; will they be any good? Touching upon cult classics is always a risk, and adapting it to reach out to a new generation will mean we’ll see the Heathers with more of an online presence in the show. Think texting, tweeting, snapchatting and Instagram. Could this become a Scream Queens-esque show? Our thoughts are divided, but we’ll have to wait and see.
