When Billy Porter talks fashion, you pay attention. The actor has been delighting folks with his sartorial choices since his breakout role in Pose thrust him into the international spotlight.
His London Fashion Week appearances were no different (he attended as a guest of the British Fashion Council) and Porter says there’s one woman in particular he looked to for inspiration.
“I’ve been doing my Meghan Markle all week with my little fascinator,” the actor said at the Christopher Kane show on Monday, adding, “I might keep wearing it when I get back to America!”
When People asked what he thought of Meghan’s modern influence on royal fashion, he said: “There’s a black woman in the palace, honey, that’s all we need!” Porter laughed, adding: “We’re loving her over in America!”
Talking to US magazine, Porter said he loves Meghan’s style because “it’s personal.” “It comes from a cultural place that the monarchy isn’t used to,” he said. “Which I think is a good thing because it shakes it up a little bit.”
At the JW Anderson show in London, Porter’s fashion icon status was all but cemented with a front row seat next to none other than Anna Wintour, while at the Victoria Beckham show, he cosied up FROW next to Helen Mirren.
“It’s been lovely to get to the place that Helen Mirren knows my name and binged on my show,” he told The New York Times. “It made me burst into tears.”
Porter then jetted back to Los Angeles to celebrate his 50th birthday with Ketel One vodka, launching his Drink Marvellously campaign in a long green floral gown, diamond choker and big afro wig. And his night didn’t end there; he went onto a taping of The Late Late Show with James Corden, swanning onto the set in a purple glittery number brandishing roses.
Nominated for best lead actor in a drama series at the Emmys on Sunday night, Porter has promised a sparkly look, with a message. “My goal is to be a walking piece of political art,” he said. We’re there for it.
