It’s likely that the ‘redder-shade-of-maroon’ will never not remind me of high school. The hue that I, and many girls in Australia, were swathed in throughout our teenage years became synonymous with classes and lunchtimes and exams. Yet, despite this deep-set memory my lasting emotion is not actually one of post-traumatic stress, in fact, burgundy remains one of my favourite shades. Good thing, because it’s back in all its grapey glory this season.

Burgundy is the colour of choice for both the northern hemisphere lead-to-winter and the southern’s lead-to-summer. It’s the perfect trans-seasonal colour. It’s appearing as structured hero jackets, statement trousers and even rich beauty appliqués for both lips and eyes. It’s sensational worn with white and black or even monochromed head to toe. And this season it’s also having a trendy affair with the other tone of the moment: marigold. Two warm, ochre pigments that are surprisingly harmonious.

In 2014 Blake Lively started the conversation when she wore a breathtaking burgundy Gucci gown to Cannes Film Festival opening night. Paired with simple hair, fresh skin and a warm lip, she proved this old-Hollywood combination is a uniquely elegant look for after dark. She has since repped it on repeat along with other converts like Kourtney Kardashian, Olivia Palermo and Mila Kunis who have done it by day, by night and by the sea!

It also hit the 2018 runways via labels like Coach and Roksanda and has formed a major part of Ellery’s just-dropped collection.

Then, of course, there’s Ron Burgundy. The world’s most dapper Anchorman will always be our burgundy-wearing OG. He wears his namesake colour via sports jacket, turtleneck and bath robe like no one else.

So while a burgundy blazer purchase might be my sartorial high school reunion, I’ll happy oblige while enjoying the two other best burgundy things in life: an Anchorman night in with a perfectly matching glass of shiraz.
