When Demna Gvasalia sent models down his Vetements Autumn/Winter 2016 runway sporting slip dresses and thigh boots under giant hoodie tops, many scoffed it was a look that would never fly. They were so wrong. The humble hoodie soon found its way from several runways that season, to street style stars and shoots in the pantheons of high fashion media.
But there’s more to hoodie mastery than simply throwing your gym gear over jeans. What’s the secret? We asked Sydney-based sports luxe queen Pip Edwards – stylist, General Pants creative director and now co-founder of label P.E Nation (which includes hoodies, natch) – for her take on the ‘smart casual hoodie’ trend.

WHY IS THIS YOUR FAVE TREND AT THE MOMENT? I love a comfy hoodie. It’s so awesome to see a pedestrian trend taken to the runway and teamed back with floor-length gowns or killer pants, then all of a sudden it’s seen as high fashion. This is music my to my ears.
WHICH luxe bRANDs have embraced it? Vetements, Balenciaga, Chloe and Louis Vuitton are all doing their own version of this trend at the moment.

What kind of hoodie works best? I love a basic oversized crew top, however I also loved that Vetements championed the actual standard shaped hoodie on its AW16 runway. A hoodie is perfect for pairing back with a slick jacket or a floor length skirt and trainers.
what’s the easiest way to make it high fashion? Exaggerating the silhouette and making it oversized is totally tomboy and can be super sexy when teamed with killer tight pants. It’s great to bring a comfort piece into a high fashion look. I think it’s a sign of the times and makes the look more achievable for everyone. After all, who doesn’t love a hoodie?

does colour matter? What we’ve mostly seen on the runway is bold or strong colours, like bottle green or red. But we’ve also seen plenty of grey marl or black or white, which works well. It’s also about iconic branding – a great logo or label, branded across the front or back is really ’90s and very street.
