Have you noticed it? The half-up ponytail red carpet revolution is happening. In a move that marries a somewhat recess-meets-Ariana-Grande vibe, with a decidedly polished appeal, celebrities have been adding the half-up-half-down equation to their red carpet repertoire in droves.

Taking the sleeker approach are Lea Michele and Bella Hadid, who both pulled half of their mutually poker-straight hair up into a smooth and glossy ponytails recently.

Meanwhile on the bombshell, bedhead spectrum are Chrissy Teigan and Elizabeth Olsen, who paired the style with her The Row dress at the CFDA Awards earlier this week.

Giving a nod to Brigitte Bardot, the original purveyor of the half-up ponytail look, Olsen’s relaxed look perfectly matched the actress’s signature paired-back, but elegant red carpet style.

“We knew we wanted a half-up look. Instead of the Hun — half-up bun look — we normally opt for, we opted for a sleek and healthy half ponytail,” Dove celebrity stylist Mark Townsend told Yahoo News, who prepped Olsen’s hair on the night with a leave-in detangler before drying it in.

Next he applied dry shampoo at her roots for red-carpet appropriate volume, before pulling half of her hair up and securing with three hair elastics, telling Yahoo News: “By tripling the elastics, the ponytail had more grip and a higher lift, and I then added a slight bend to her ends with my R Sessions Tidal Waver, wrapping her locks around the larger of the two irons.”

Olsen was clearly loving her look, as she reworked it into a airport-appropriate version for her flight the following day. Now that’s a mark of a hairstyle that has legs.
