There’s something uniquely comforting about the feel of a soft quality woolen jumper. Likewise is the mere sight of a ball of wool for me, given childhood memories of my grandmother’s knitting basket, which sat as a permanent fixture in her living room.

Far from being a vintage notion though, woolen knits are currently a fire-factor fashion trend following the most recent Autumn/Winter shows – and not just because chillier weather’s struck. Burberry featured one-armed cable knits as feature pieces on its AW17 runway. Similarly, killer knits cropped up atop the Balenciaga, Temperley London, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Miu Miu, Chloe and Christopher Kane catwalks too.

From classic roll-necks to kooky cardigans and everything in between, the humble knit-one-pearl-one has had a cool-style revival, but the simplest (and for that matter sleekest) way to wear knits this season is minimal, boxy and loose. Team a statement neck with an A-line skirt, blazer jacket and flat boots for a papp-worthy daytime look, and palazzo pants and block heels for evening, a la Sports Illustrated star Senora Sampaio.

There’s never a questionable time in winter to wear a luxe knit, but this week it’s front of mind for the GRAZIA office than usual. From May 13 to 21, Australian organisation The Woolmark Company, the global authority on merino wool, has teamed up with retail giant Westfield to create a winter fashion campaign showcasing both the growers who produce the fibre and the designers who use it to create high fashion looks.
