Experimenting with bright colours through fashion is a cinch, isn’t it? All it takes to inject some bright into even the most monochromatic monogamist’s wardrobe is a bright nano bag or some punchy pumps. Colourful makeup however doesn’t share that same ‘I just threw it on’ quality. Instead it can come across as more of a deliberate choice, feel like a riskier move, and for most of us just something reserved for ‘make-up people’ or in YouTube tutorials.

With the Autumn/Winter 2016 shows finally bucking the no make-up, make-up trend, it’s easier than ever to embrace cheerful beauty shades. The stand-out were the psychedelic eyes Peter Philips’ created backstage at Fendi AW16, which were like the make-up equivalent of a colourful Bag Bug: cool and fun without trying too hard.

Gigi Hadid tried the technicoloured trend, posing in pink lips on Instagram during her stint as a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race; and Katy Perry’s signature matte lip collection (out in Australia later this year) was the beauty stand-out at this year’s Coachella.
The trick to going bright while still maintaining an, ‘I woke up like this’ vibe is in the side acts. Think: low key hair and a barely-there base.
