When time comes to consider the qualities desirable of an item to symbolise one’s legacy, you’ll likely think of the medium before the message. While an object’s aesthetic sensibilities will always appear paramount, it’s what’s on the inside that counts (turns out your mother really was onto something).

The Nespresso Essenza Mini certainly understands the importance of both. An instant design classic, the Essenza Mini (true to its name) is Nespresso’s smallest machine to date – a seriously powerful addition to your countertop, and one that means you needn’t sacrifice on bench space or brute force when it comes to making the every day ritual of your coffee an extraordinary one. Perhaps best of all, there’s no need to wait and inherit one when they’re available now.

James Irvine, the cocktail programme manager for Sydney’s Swillhouse Group, inherited an altogether different kind of heirloom – a love of Star Wars – from his mother. Here, he proposes an alternative heirloom: a fresh and fruity cocktail, built from a base of vodka and grapefruit juice, and enlivened through the addition of the biscuit and fruit notes of Nespresso Volluto Grand Cru, a caramelised piña and dry fino sherry.

Unlike Star Wars, there’s no question who’s taking the first shot here. Serve ‘solo’, and pass it on.

The NESPRESSO Heirloom
25ML CHILLED NESPRESSO Volluto GRAND CRU
50ml Absolut ELYX
50ml Fresh grapefruit juice
30ml Sparkling water
30ml Caramelised Piña
15ml Fino sherry

Shake and strain all your ingredients into a chilled copper pineapple loaded with crushed ice, also known as The Heirloom in question. Garnish with a dehydrated pineapple wheel, and if you’re feeling particularly generous, the fragrant smoke of charred anise embers. A copper straw is non-negotiable, naturally.
