In the wake of the passing of the inimitable Karl Lagerfeld, it seemed fitting for Chanel to host their latest soiree within a room billowing with cherry blossoms. A bloom to mark the spring time, the flower is also symbolic of a time of renewal and the fleeting nature of life. Among the petals at Balthazar restaurant in Lower Manhattan on a brisk Monday were tweed berets, quilted purses and double-C hair clips as 100 stars from the fashion, film and art worlds gathered.

The party, now in its 14th year, marks the Tribeca Film Festival’s celebration of creatives from all industries and platforms. It honours co-founders Jane Rosenthal and Robert De Niro’s Artists Awards Program which elects the artists to give a piece of their artwork to the winners of this year’s festival, announced on May 2.

“Seventeen years ago when we had to give an award to our filmmakers, I thought we should give a piece of art to artists supporting other artists and I didn’t think that having another weird sculpture would work,” Rosenthal said. “So I asked my artist friends and here we are all these years later.”

Guests included Alexander Skarsgård who was spotted hanging by the kitchen and Cara Delevingne who kept things coy with rumoured new girlfriend Ashley Benson. Katie Holmes was spotted holding fort at the bar with Zac Posen and reclusive actor Leonardo DiCaprio was seen from beneath his baseball cap (again). Other guests included Diane Kruger, Angela Bassett, Helena Christensen, Kathryn Newton, Grace Gummer, Boots Riley, Debra Messing, Mark Ronson and Darren Aronofsky.

Take a peek at the arrivals now. A spring awakening, indeed.
