In our world, luxury can be defined by many things. In beauty, it is often defined by one thing, Crème de la Mer. A jar of pure skin magic, it has captivated the imaginations (and beauty cupboards) of countless devotees since its conception, and continues to remain a source of endless intrigue to this day. But why is this little pot of cream rendered with such esteem? What is this power it possesses over us? Results, of course. But there is a deep mystery which surrounds it. Truth be told, there is a little magic in every jar, but behind it, there is a little science, too. And it all began * years ago with an ailing aerospace physicist…
Those well-versed in the language of La Mer will have heard of its creator, Dr. Max Huber. To most, a link between physics and skincare seems a stretch. But for the aerospace physicist, Dr. Huber was forever fascinated by the power of physics and the role it played in our skin. It was only when a lab incident went awry that his fascination was truly compounded. Burns devastated his body, and in turn, he began his plight to remedy both the appearance and pain of the burns. And never had his intrigue been so valuable.
They say when you put a shell to your ear, you can hear the ocean. Perhaps it was a similar gesture that led Dr. Huber to the ocean, who was convinced the answer lay deep below the sea. And, he was right. Out to sea, he found his answer deep in the Pacific Ocean, in a nutrient-rich kelp forest off the coast of Vancouver. Natural sea kelp, as it were, harnessed supreme regenerative powers, and this became the heart to his remedy.
But like all good things, it took time. 12 years, to be exact. Ever the perfectionist, Dr. Huber crafted his Crème, experiment after experiment. Over 6,000 experiments later, and he (finally) struck skin gold: the miraculous skin-soother he aptly named, Miracle Broth. He even played music to it. Truly. When he exposed the fermenting marine nutrients to light and sound waves, the efficacy of the kelp and vitamins within became far more potent. Like music to his ears, his task was complete; a cell-renewing elixir that elicited the smoothest, softest, most radiant-looking skin – and most importantly, healed him.
Today, to preserve the magic, Dr. Huber’s practises are strictly adhered to. We, like all natural things on the earth, ride the unrelenting wave of the tide and the moon. Sea kelp is no different, and by observing lunar cycles, Dr. Huber realised the renewal rate was thus affected, meaning the kelp could only be harvested twice a year for optimum results. It is still harvested by hand only twice a year, placed on ice and swiftly rushed back to the La Mer labs in New York City to keep its nutrients rich and mighty.
It is in these marine-protected waters, and these waters only, that the secret to La Mer is unlocked. To this day, the sea kelp is sustainably sourced from only one place in the world, the same place Dr. Huber uncovered all those years ago.
A sea change which changed Dr. Huber’s skin; the legend of La Mer and its miraculous golden elixir lives on today, and continues to change our skin. Is it magic? Almost.
