Today holds the dubious distinction of being National Selfie Day, whatever that even is.

It’s an occasion on which Instagram thought it apt to announce that the beloved photo sharing app has surpassed half a billion monthly active users, revealing that some 300 million people are using the app every day to share groundbreaking visual content and their invaluable contribution to the canon.

The platform’s monthly user base has more than doubled in size over the past two years to reach the half a billion mark – a rabid fanbase that share, on average, more than 95 million photos and videos that generate 4.2 billion likes per day.

Other insights garnered reveal that more than 80% of all Instagram users are located outside of the United States; more than 82 million people have posted their #OOTD (Outfit Of The Day); over 325 million have partaken in a #TBT; and over 381,000 have used the platform to share their #firsttattoo. At the time of writing, 255,918,046 have posted a #selfie.

Happy National Selfie Day, I guess.
