Cowboy boots might be the coolest heeled footwear of 2018, but Isabel Marant’s made a good case for Pirate boots surpassing their it-status come 2019.

In fact, her Spring Summer 2019 collection presented on a Paris Fashion Week runway overnight just set a new benchmark for bohemian-chic dressing that’s as sexy high fashion as it is hipster.

Her typical artisanal fabrics and embroidery were there, but mixed with high-shine metallic leather and crystal mesh fabrics. Which other luxury designers can layer a diamonte belt over linen right now so it makes sense?

Denim featured heavily this season around in pale acid-wash hues and voluminous shapes that both harked back to the 1980s, as did the high-waisted paper bag pants and mini-shorts. (To quasi-quote Hamlet: Get thee to a gymnasium, Ophelia.)

A standout though was the key boot teamed with most looks in the show: a high-heeled pirate style boot in varying fabrics that was slouched enough to feel louche without losing any thigh-high appeal. White studded leather, black suede, worn blue denim – there are boots to suit every, well, hot pant jumpsuit. There were even a handful of matching looks for the guys.

Maybe it was intentional, or perhaps she just drew the wild card twice, but 17-year-old Kaia Gerber wore the two standout looks that book-ended the show mood, one a daytime denim outfit, the other a disco-perfect dress.

The irony is she wasn’t born the original time any of the trends referenced by Marant had their first moments in the sun. But perhaps that’s the whole point of having Californian cool-girl meet Parisian party chic.
