Meghan Markle has given birth to a baby boy, the royal family announced.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s first child arrived at 5.26 AM on Monday May 6 London time (2.26pm Monday AEST), Buckingham Palace confirmed.
“Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex was safely delivered of a son at 0526hrs (2.26pm Monday AEST),” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
“The baby weighs 7lbs 3oz (3.26kg).
“The Duke of Sussex was present for the birth.”
Within a few hours of the birth, a clearly emotional and overwhelmed Prince Harry said a few words outside Windsor Castle.
“I’m very excited to announce that Meghan and myself had a baby boy earlier this morning, a very healthy boy,” he said.
Mother and baby are doing incredibly well, it’s been the most amazing experience I could ever have possibly imagined.”
Paying special tribute to Meghan, he added:
“How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension. But we’re both absolutely thrilled.
“It was amazing, absolutely incredible,” he continued.
“As I say, I am so incredibly proud of my wife and, as every father and parent would ever say your baby is absolutely amazing, this little baby is absolutely to die for.”
It’s unclear if Meghan gave birth at a hospital or at home.
A traditional easel bearing the news was placed outside Buckingham Palace.
He said they had not yet decided on a name for their son.
