It’s been 16 years since the original Charlie’s Angels movie (and almost 40 years since the TV show), so it was only a matter of time until the feminist tale got a reboot.

Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska have filled the shoes of Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore for the upcoming film, playing a trio of special-ops agents, meanwhile Elizabeth Banks plays Bosley, the Angels’ boss.

It doesn’t hit the big screen until November, but thankfully overnight Sony dropped a trailer for the movie.

Judging from the brief trailer, this iteration of Charlie’s Angels seems more self-aware, taking itself less seriously than versions past. Almost a tongue-in-cheek take on the loveable but ever-so-slightly cheesy concept, there’s lots of over-the-top scenes. Take the opening of the trailer, where Stewart is seemingly flirting with a businessman in a hotel room. Dressed in a blonde wig and pink sequinned dress, she suddenly pulls some acrobatic moves, wraps a curtain around his neck, punches him in the face several times before hitting with him an almighty head-butt.

British actress Scott is perhaps best known for her role as Kimberly in Power Rangers, while it’s the most high-profile role to date for fellow Brit Balinska, who viewers might recognise from Casualty, Midsomer Murders and The Athena. It also stars To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before actor Noah Centineo and screen legend Patrick Stewart.

Banks, who directed and produced the film, as well as acting in it, said of the decision to reboot the iconic franchise, “Charlie’s Angels, for me, is one of the original brands to celebrate the empowered woman since its debut in the 70s. This film honours the legacy of Charles Townsend and his agency while introducing a new era of modern and global Angels.”

Continuing the theme of female empowerment, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Ray teamed up for the theme song, paying homage to the Destiny’s Child track Independent Woman that became synonymous with the 2000 Angels film.

Charlie’s Angels is set for release in November.
