If Jennifer Lopez’s star is Hustlers’ best chance at award season glory, so be it. While most of the buzz surrounding the film at the Toronto International Film Festival in September centred upon the 50-year-old’s transfixing performance as a hardened stripper named Ramona, few critics actually believe Lopez will walk away with a Golden statue today. It also seemed so pie-in-the-sky that a film like this would be recognised by the Hollywood Foreign Press. Alas, the diamante thong has spoken.

The performer is up for the Best Supporting Actress In A Motion Picture gong in Lorene Scafaria’s Hustlers; a real-life tale about a bunch of New York City strippers navigating the late-aughts’ financial crisis by drugging and robbing Wall Street suits. Lopez will go head-to-head with Australia’s Margot Robbie (Bombshell), Kathy Bates (Richard Jewell), Annette Bening (The Report) and Laura Dern (Marriage Story). If she wins, it will mark a huge milestone in her already megawatt career.

“Could not be prouder to be recognised by the [Hollywood Foreign Press Association]” Lopez posted upon her nomination news in December. “Ramona was a complicated character and it was an honour and challenge to bring her to life. Hustlers was a labour of love, sweat and perseverance written, directed, produced, edited and starring a group of bad-ass women.”

Lopez arrived at the 77th Golden Globe Awards dressed in what looked like a present from Christmas’ past. In a cream floor length gown adorned with a giant gold and emerald green bow, Twitter likened likened to a perfect angel decoration sold in Mariah’s Christmas shop.

As Ramona says in the film, “The game is rigged and it does not reward people who play by the rules”. Sartorially speaking, she’s broken them tonight. Will it mean her first Globe win? Maybe. In the meantime, shush those annoying critics.
