Ahead of the September 13 release of Jennifer Lopez’s newest film Hustlers, the singer took fiancé and former Yankees player Alex Rodriguez to a strip club. The singer was doing homework so she could play the role of professional dancer Ramona, the film’s heroine.

“[Lopez] and Alex went and visited a strip club, and she was able to give me some … insights,” Hustlers’ writer-director Lorene Scarfaria said. “Jennifer’s obviously such an unbelievable dancer, but she trained so hardcore for this. Pole dancing is not like anything else. It required muscles you don’t know you have. So we did treat it a little bit like a sports movie in that way.”

In addition to training, the star couple quit sugar and carbs as part of a 10-day challenge earlier this year. “We work out together all the time,” Rodriguez told E News!. “[Lopez] is a fitness enthusiast and she’s a much better athlete than me. She does all types of workouts which I don’t try to keep up.”

A huge difference in Lopez’s lifestyle compared to the average Australian is the little luxuries she omits from her life: Alcohol, smoking and drinking are off limits (she sips decaf in the morning). Even after the superstar was honoured with the 2018 VMA’s Vanguard Award, she put her children to bed and went to her own after party at Beauty & Essex on New York’s Lower East Side and reportedly didn’t consume a single drop of champagne. “I don’t drink or smoke or have caffeine,” she’s admitted. “That really wrecks your skin as you get older.”

Inspired by a New York Magazine article by Jessica Pressler which went viral, Hustlers tells the true story of former strip club employees who band together to turn the tables on their Wall Street clients. The film also stars Cardi B and Lili Reinhart.

Hustlers hits Australian cinemas on September 13.
