In her compelling New York Times op ed this week, feminist and author Roxane Gay put the pressure on men to “step up” to stamp out sexual abuse and harassment.

“Men can start putting in some of the work women have long done in offering testimony,” the esteemed writer argued. “It’s time for men to start answering for themselves because women cannot possibly solve this problem they had no hand in creating.”

John Legend took the same view when asked about the Harvey Weinstein scandal, and the subsequent unveiling of engrained sexual abuse in Hollywood.

“I think it’s good we’re bringing light to this issue and hopefully more women will be able to tell their stories,” Legend told TMZ. “Men need to listen and change their behaviour.”

The Ordinary People singer and husband to Chrissy Teigen, with whom he shares one-year-old daughter Luna, continued:

“What we’re seeing right now with the conversation around sexual assault and harassment is crucial.

“This really needs to change, because it affects so many people — particularly women — and it’s perpetrated the vast majority by men.

“We have a responsibility to do better as men. Hopefully we can improve the way that young men are thinking and behaving in regards to that.”

What a Legend.
