Can exes be friends? It’s a question most women have grappled with at some point in their romantic lives. Any secure, mature person should be able to occasionally communicate with a past love, as a way of “tipping your hat to the time you shared together,” as Harry Styles would put it. Granted of course that that ex meant something to you and usually for a decent period of time.

Case in point: Joshua Jackson and Diane Kruger. For whatever reason, the lovers split after a decade long relationship in July 2016. A statement at the time simply read they “decided to separate and remain friends.” Both have moved on – the 38-year-old Dawson’s Creek alum was spotted kissing a mystery woman on a date in Manhattan in New York earlier this year while Kruger went public with her new relationship with The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus in March 2017.

Still Jackson had the maturity to tip his hat – or realistically, hand over his whole cap – by congratulating his 40-year-old ex on winning the Best Actress award at the 70th annual Cannes Film Festival across the weekend. “Yes she Cannes,” the actor posted on his Instagram. “Having witnessed the integrity and dedication that you bring to every job, I’m over the moon to see you getting the recognition you deserve. One question is what took ‘em so long! CONGRATULATIONS, Josh.”

Take note, Ex-Boyfriends.

(Note: Kruger did respond.)
