Despite very little information on Julia Roberts and Lucas Hedges’s new film Ben Is Back, a first-look says this could be one of the most intriguing titles of 2018/19. In a screenplay from Academy Award-nominee Peter Hedges (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, About A Boy), what we do know is the film was filmed in New York City and centres upon Holly (Roberts), a suburban mother who is shocked when her 19-year-old son, Ben (Hedges), unexpectedly returns home on Christmas Eve. Over the next 24-hours, Holly is worry-stricken about Ben staying clean and a mother’s unconditional love for her son is tested as she does everything in her power to keep him safe.
While the film will release in the US on December 7, Australian audiences will have to wait until January 31. The film also stars Courtney B. Vance and Big Little Lies actress Kathryn Newton. The Ben Is Back cast will descend upon a Canadian red carpet at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival in early September – also known as the unofficial start to award season.
In the interim, we take a look back at Roberts’ top five emotional scenes, where we have cried with her.
