Maybe she’s a creature of habit. Maybe she likes to keep her shoe cupboard seriously minimal. Whatever the reason next-gen modelling royalty Kaia Gerber keeps wearing the same style of off-duty kicks, it’s currently giving us a serious case of street-sneak deja vu.

Every time the 17-year-old wears her Converse Chuck Taylor high-tops – with jeans, with a sundress, with denim hot pants, even with tailored suiting – it’s a stark reminder that despite being the most in-demand designer runway model in the world right now, Gerber’s still a cool Cali girl with her feet firmly on the ground.

Maybe it’s the comfort factor that keeps her bouncing back. The classic style, which began life as a pro-basketballer boot in the 1970s, has recently had a high-tech update that’s upped the arch support. The shape and canvas materials nod to the OG original, but the super-soft new foam sole feels more akin to springy sports trainers.

Whatever the reason Chuck Taylors are her go-to, Gerber’s certainly committed – she’s been snapped wearing them practically weekly for the past 12 months. That frequency even jumped to daily to daily during the recent Spring Sumer 2019 runway shows at Paris Fashion Week, to the point some media queried whether she’d packed any other shoes for the trip.

Gerber’s not alone in the Chuck Taylor fan club. Victoria’s Secret Angels Taylor Hill and Martha Hunt have theirs on regular rotation, as do Natalie Portman, Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, and A-list fashion blogger Caroline Daur.

Recent limited-edition collaborations with Comme des Garcons (featuring its signature smiling heart motif) and then Off-White by Virgil Abloh have just added to the Chuck Taylor 70 fashion hype. (The latter was in such hot demand that wannabe customers went into a raffle-style ballot for the privilege of then buying them. At the time of this article, pairs bought for less than $180 were available for resale online with another zero added to the price.)

Gerber, however, is happy to keep things classic when it comes to her Chucks. After all, what’s easier to wear than a classic black sporty kick? Nostalgic to boot.
