Over the weekend, Kaia Gerber celebrated her 18th birthday (how is she only 18?!) the only way model offspring know how; by channelling your famous mum. Arriving at her milestone soiree in Manhattan, Gerber paid homage to mama Cindy Crawford’s 1992 Versace leather bondage look with a little bondage meets bombshell number of her own.
Recalling the seduction of Versace’s scintillating 1992 show entitled “Miss S&M”, the Donatella-helmed Versace of today recreated the collection’s signature trope – fetish wear – with a bespoke, bondage-inspired leather outfit for Kaia Gerber’s birthday party. While Crawford didn’t walk in the actual show (Helena Christensen and Christy Turlington did in similar looks), Crawford wore the sexed-up sadomasochist outfit to the 1992 MTV Awards instead.
With a near-identical gold-buckled harness, lattice corset and over-the-knee cage sandals enriched with heritage Medusas, Gerber added a leather mini skirt with split and gilded Medusa accoutrements by Atelier Versace. Her hair too riffed her mother’s; a quiff rich in irony, it sat coaxed high and mighty just like Crawford’s iconic ’90s bouffant.
We guess the best way to nail a dress-up party is to get the exact same designer to make the costume. Even better, be related to the star in question, and in Kaia Gerber’s case, she couldn’t look more like her famous mum.
