As America grapples with the possibility that Donald Trump could be the country’s next president, the idea of Kanye West in the Oval Office doesn’t seem so ludicrous.

After first announcing his plans to run for office in the next US election at last year’s MTV Video Music Awards, Kanye has again renewed his intentions in an interview with BBC Radio 1 host Annie Mac.

“When I talk about the idea of being president, I’m not saying I have any political views,” West said. “I just have a view on humanity, on people, on the truth.”

He expressed his sadness at the gun violence that is currently ravaging the US, and his hope that he could do something to stop the devastation, particularly in his hometown of Chicago.

“We are numb,” he said. “We’re numb to 500 kids getting killed in Chicago a year.

“We’re numb to the fact that it was seven police shootings in the beginning of July,” he added. “If there is anything that I can do with my time and my day, to somehow make a difference while I’m alive, I’m going to try to do it.”

After his statement at the 2015 VMAs, Kanye continued the discussion in an interview with Vanity Fair.

“I sit in clubs and I’m like, ‘Wow, I’ve got five years before I go and run for office and I’ve got a lot of research to do, I’ve got a lot of growing up to do,'” he told the magazine.

After the baffling success of Donald Trump in his bid for the top job, it’s unlikely anyone would be surprised at a Yeezy For President campaign in four years’ time. And if Trump is elected this November, Kanye would no doubt be a welcome change – and Kim a First Lady even more controversial than Melania Trump (that’s no easy feat).
