Kate Middleton was criticised for wearing an olive green dress to the BAFTA awards in London yesterday, the royal opting not to wear black to support the Time’s Up movement, as many women did.

But a royal expert has come to her defence, pointing out there are a couple of key factors that would have influenced her decision to wear green.

Katie Nicholl, who literally wrote the book on the Duchess of Cambridge (Kate: The Future Queen) says because of her pregnancy, Middleton would have chosen her dress long before the Time’s Up movement gained momentum.

Nicholl told TMZ that Kate would have consulted with the designer to create a dress that could be easily modified based on her growing baby bump.

As Nicholl also pointed out, royals are discouraged from making political statements, which may have been in a factor. But then again, wearing black to an awards night could hardly be seen as controversial.

Thankfully for Kate, Jennifer Lawrence has taken the heat off of her by getting embroiled in her own controversy.

Some on Twitter have described a comment she made on stage to present an award as “rude” and “stuck up”, although Lawrence has hit back at the accusation today.
