When an Italian magazine published photos of Kate Middleton sunbathing topless in 2012, no-one cared what Donald Trump’s opinion of the situation was.

Regardless, he tweeted his thoughts, as Buzzfeed has reminded us today, blaming the Duchess of Cambridge and not the photographer that used a long lens to snap pictures of the royal on a private property in France (where paparazzi are subject to stricter laws than elsewhere).

“Who wouldn’t take Kate’s picture and make lots of money if she does the nude sunbathing thing,” Trump wrote. “Come on Kate!”

Fast-forward four-and-a-half years and Donald Trump is now the President of the United States, and today he accepted an invitation from British Prime Minister Teresa May on behalf of the Queen to visit the UK later this year, where we can  assume he would meet other members of the Royal family as well.

Kate’s a mature woman, the epitome of class, elegance and etiquette. But she’s also thoroughly modern.  Will she be willing to see Trump’s victim-blaming comments about her as water under the London Bridge? Or will the idea of shaking hands, sharing a kiss and offering pleasantries to a man who blamed her when her naked body was exploited too much to stomach?

Six people, including paparazzi and magazine bosses, are currently on trial in Paris over the publishing of the photos, and could face jail time and massive fines if convicted. Hopefully the French legal system is on her side, even if Trump is not.
