As Prince Harry jetted back to his wife, Meghan Markle, and son, Archie Harrison, in Canada, Prince William and Kate Middleton put on a brave face amid the drama, hosting a reception at Buckingham Palace on behalf of The Queen.

The function, to celebrate the UK’s relationship with Africa, was the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first solo engagement since the ‘Megxit‘ deal was finalised over the weekend. For the formal evening, Kate wore top-to-toe red in an elegant sequin Needle & Thread gown which she accessorised with red pumps and a clutch.

Kate wore her hair, which is slightly lighter than her signature brunette shade, in loose waves and was seen during the night laughing with her husband, who spoke of his close ties to Africa, referencing proposing to the duchess in Kenya in 2010, during his speech.

“The African continent holds a very special place in my heart. It is the place my father took my brother and me shortly after our mother died,” he said, before adding, “And when deciding where best to propose to Catherine, I could think of no more fitting place than Kenya to get down on one knee.”

Of course, this appearance comes as a trying time for the royal family, while Meghan and Harry’s roles are absorbed by the monarchy. Over the weekend, Harry gave a candid speech, saying that the couple’s decision to leave their positions was made because they felt they had “no other option.”
