While we watched supermodel Gigi Hadid flawlessly trudge between shows during an icy NYFW, across the Atlantic in “sunny” London, the elite fashion set tightly clutched their after-party invitations on Monday night. That piece of paper was of course a regal guaranteed entry to arguably one of the most elegant clubs in the world; Annabel’s on Berkeley Square in London’s Mayfair district AKA Love Magazine and Burberry LFW after-party. Inside guests would find models Winnie Harlow, Bella Hadid and Adwoa Aboah and singer Ellie Goulding and ex-boyfriend Dougie Poynter (cue whispers).
But the night belonged to co-host for the evening, Kendall Jenner who shimmied off the runway to a Love Magazine signing on Dover Street in bold metallic, a key trend on every red carpet. In what seemed an amped-up version of Diane von Furtenburg’s 1974 wrap dress – a crossed-over-at-the-bust and tied-at-the-waist creation introduced during the Women’s Liberation Movement – Jenner opted for a velvet spin-off. (According to von Furstenburg at the time, it was “a dress that both a guy liked and his mother didn’t mind” and acknowledged the needs of a growing number of career-minded women, like herself. Easy to tie-up and take-off – there was no zipper which meant no noise – the power the dress gave to women didn’t stop at the office. According to the designer, the dress could facilitate an illicit sexual liaison if a woman felt that way inclined. “They’re comfortable,” von Furstenburg famously said of the first generation launch. “And if you’re comfortable, you act comfortable, and then you get laid.”)
Jenner added to this notion with knee-high boots and a bright red lip and although not wearing DVF, Hadid also joined Jenner by wearing a wrap dress. Jenner then changed into a white wool-woven hoodie and slip dress. Ten stars.
