Today is the day I am publicly positing the very real consideration that we may never get sick of the neck scarf trend. It’s unassuming, slick and sleek, and most importantly, embraces simplicity. When did you last see an accessory that has the power to transform a look instantly into: “Oh me? I was ensconced in my dry martini, sorry — vous voulez quoi?” Interest was reinvigorated in this classic piece after it made waves in Clare Waight Keller’s Autumn/Winter 2015 Chloé collection, spurring an avalanche of interpretations.

The challenging style endeavour lies in the sheer volume of ways a scarf can deliver ultimate versatility – so many ways to wear, so little time! And just like the law of gravity itself is indisputable, so too is the law of trends in 2016: if you see Kendall Jenner wear it more than three times, you know it’s absolute. Jenner is what we would call a neck scarf connoisseur — observe in equal parts admiration and confoundment the many permutations in which she works this accessory with perfect aplomb and test drive her styling cues yourself with our our shopping picks below.

Exhibit A is clearly all about pretending you are French. Loop a longer silk scarf once around, then tie at the side of your neck. Essentials include a smokey eye, casual top knot and an unimpressed, borderline salty attitude.

Exhibit B takes the classic bandana and makes it new again – if you’re a scarf neophyte start here because this can literally work with most looks. The key is to treat your scarf like it’s a necklace  twist and then tie loosely around your neck so that it sits just above your collarbone.
