Some millennials may say Kirsten Dunst was a late bloomer, in the digital space anyway. Joining Instagram (read: the 21st century’s newspaper) in March 2016, the 35-year-old’s reasoning for setting up a social feed seemed coerced if her latest interview is anything to go by.
Speaking to Marie Claire, The Beguiled star told reporter Mickey Rapkin of the pressures women in Hollywood are under to remain relevant and front of mind for directors. “You can get jobs based on your Instagram following these days. That’s insane,” she revealed. “But that’s why I have [Instagram] now.
“As a man, you could get away with not having [Instagram]. As a woman in this industry, I think you gotta do it now. It’s just part of the game.”
Dunst leaves behind an exclusive little club of leading actresses who are yet to give into the pressures of posting to the social media medium. They include Jennifer Lawrence, Rachel McAdams, Mila Kunis, Angelina Jolie, Sandra Bullock, Scarlett Johansson, Emily Blunt, Emma Stone, Kristen Stewart, Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts and Kate Winslet.
