“They just don’t make movies like this anymore”. It’s the film no one expected to love this much. And when director Damien Chazelle moved to Los Angeles armed with a musical screenplay and an original score from his college roommate, he didn’t expect this day to come either. “[The script] was initially met with a lot of blank stares,” says 31-year-old Chazelle. For today, his film La La Land has swept the Golden Globe Awards taking home Best Motion Picture, Best Director for a Motion Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Actor in a musical or comedy (Ryan Gosling) and, just announced, Best Actress in a musical or comedy (Emma Stone). For both actors, this is their first Golden Globe win. And Stone (who awkwardly and hilariously double-hugged her director as he tried to kiss his girlfriend) was clearly excited. “That was weird, I’m sorry!” she exclaimed.

The musical genre, polarising by this very detail, tells the story of jazz evangelist Seb (Gosling) and struggling actress Mia (Stone) as they navigate through the hard town of Los Angeles. The first scene sees Chazelle takeover a busy LA highway to film a musical sequence amid a traffic jam. It’s fabulous but not for every viewer. What you don’t expect is to absolutely fall in love with the tale and the characters and it’s surprising ending.

Gosling beat out Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool), Hugh Grant (Florence Foster Jenkins), Colin Farrell (The Lobster) and Jonah Hill (War Dogs) while Stone won over Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins), Hailee Steinfeld (The Edge Of Seventeen), Lily Collins (Rules Don’t Apply) and Annette Bening (20th Century Woman). Chazelle beat out Mel Gibson’s critically acclaimed Hacksaw Ridge as Best Director.

Isabelle Huppert’s performance in Elle beat favourite Natalie Portman in the Best Actress in a Drama category and Casey Affleck took home Best actor in a drama for his role in Manchester By The Sea. Stone’s ex-boyfriend Andrew Garfield was up in this category for his role in Hacksaw Ridge. Another upset for Australian saw Nicole Kidman beaten by Viola Davis who was just too good in her Denzel Washington directed film, Fences.

La La Land is in Australian cinemas now.
