She may have won a Golden Globe for her vampish performance in American Horror Story: Hotel, but an Academy Award could also be within reach for Lady Gaga if the buzz around her first significant film performance (Five Foot Two notwithstanding) in A Star Is Born is to be believed. The first trailer for the film, released overnight, sees Gaga take to the stage as a struggling performer, Ally, opposite Cooper’s seasoned and waning star, Jackson Maine.
“It’s a dream come true and an honour to be a part of this incredible movie,” the singer wrote on Twitter. “Bradley’s ability as a director, actor and musician is astounding. It’s called A Star Is Born, and I’m beyond thrilled for you to meet Jack and Ally.”
Cooper’s directorial debut is the third remake of the original A Star Is Born, the 1937 film for which Janet Gaynor won an Academy Award for her role as an aspiring actress in a relationship with the fading movie star who helped launch her career. The film was rebooted in 1954 with Judy Garland in her Oscar-nominated comeback role, and again in 1976 starring Barbra Streisand (who won an Oscar for Best Original Song) and Kris Kristofferson. In a strange twist of fate, Cooper and Gaga performed segments of the film live at Coachella and at Glastonbury last year on the same stage as Kristofferson, who performed during an earlier set.
The project is a long-gestating one for Cooper, who was initially only meant to star in the film opposite Beyoncé under the direction of Clint Eastwood, who later stepped away from the project and suggested that Cooper take the helm. Early reports and film material indicated that Gaga would be billed using her birth name, Stefani Germanotta, however all signs point to that no longer being the case. The film is slated for release on October 4 this year.
