Lady Gaga’s sartorial choice last night held great significance, one that brought her to tears as she accepted an award at the Elle Women In Hollywood Awards in Los Angeles. Jennifer Lopez introduced and honoured the popstar, actor and activist. “In a world where so many of us are taught to believe that there is a limit to what we can do, we’re here tonight to celebrate a woman who is limitless, who defines and redefines her own path without fear: Lady Gaga,” Lopez began.

“A girl from New York, I love you,” she continued. “You inspire, not only me but a generation to keep challenging themselves and chasing their dreams. In A Star Is Born, you have captivated the world. You’ve done it. And built on not only grit but vulnerability. Your artistry is really something to marvel at. I stand beside you and alongside everyone in this room, cheering you on as you continue to evolve.”

Gaga, who was dressed in a 90s-inspired oversized Marc Jacobs pantsuit told the audience that while she was getting ready, she was choosing from beautiful gowns from designers like Brandon Maxwell, Dior and Rodarte but none of them felt quite right. The A Star Is Born actress described the lone low-slung, wide-legged pantsuit in the corner of the room and thought it appropriate to wear to such an event, one where women “wear the pants.” “I had a revelation that I had to be empowered to be myself today more than ever,” Gaga said becoming emotional on stage. “To resist the standards of Hollywood, whatever that means. To resist the standards of dressing to impress. To use what really matters: my voice.”

“We are not just objects to entertain the world,” continued Gaga. “We women, we are voices. We have deep thoughts and ideas and beliefs and values about the world and we have the power to speak and be heard and fight back when we are silenced.”

Gaga was joined at the awards with her fiancé Christina Carino. Yes you read that correctly. While the 31-year-old has been wearing a ring on her engagement finger for many months, last night confirmed the happy news when Gaga thanked her “fiancé Christian”. As loyal fans would know, Gaga broke off her engagement to Chicago Fire actor Taylor Kinney in 2016. At the time, the couple said they needed time apart but asked fans to please “root for us” – seemingly signaling the fire hadn’t completely burned out. Just last week, Kinney said he had watched his ex’s new film and wished her the best. “I’ll tell you that I’m really proud. I don’t know. It’s watching someone live their dream, so, continued success and I hope it keeps climbing,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “The sky is the limit. I hope it does really well, and I know it’ll mean the world to her that I think everybody is receptive and yeah, I wish her the best.”

We wonder how Kinney would be feeling this morning…
