The jury in Bill Cosby’s sexual assault trial failed to reach a verdict after days of deliberating, forcing the judge to declare a mistrial, it was revealed on Saturday.

Prosecutors have announced they’ll retrial the case to seek justice for the actor’s alleged victims, but the result is nonetheless a blow for those that would like to see the legal system adequately support victims of sexual violence.

Following the news that Cosby would walk free and probably not see the inside of a court again for some time, Lena Dunham spoke out with a message of support for survivors of sexual assault and any woman feeling deflated by the results.

“Bill Cosby’s trial is about much more than Bill Cosby,” Dunham wrote in a series of tweets.

“When women see justice served, their own fear & trauma are eased.

“When they don’t, survivors of sexual assault have to watch every day as the legal system calls them liars and denies their truth. It is an unimaginable grind.”

“My heart is with every survivor reliving the erasure of their own experience today,” she continued. “I see you. I love you. P.S. It’s okay to check out of the news and honor yourself today. Do whatever you need to feel whole.”

Cosby has been accused by more than 50 women of rape and sexual misconduct, the cases beginning in the sixties and being as recent as 2008.

Many of the allegations include the woman believing she’d been drugged by Cosby, becoming unconscious so she could not defend herself against assault.

Cosby has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
