Lena Dunham – writer, director, actress, lightning rod – further diversifies an already very impressive CV with the release of the above, the first trailer for Suited.

Produced with noted best friend and fellow Girls showrunner Jenni Konner, Suited is a forthcoming HBO documentary that looks as though it has the potential to change the way people see fashion in much the same way the equal parts cerebral and emotive Bill Cunningham: New York and Dior & I did.

Far from the rarefied couture salons and petites mains of Dior & I, Suited instead takes the Brooklyn-based tailors at Bindle & Keep as its setting, with a cast of characters who traverse the gender identity spectrum. Bindle & Keep specialise in tailoring clothes for gender non-conforming clients, including (as seen above) a trans man preparing for his wedding and a young boy transitioning ahead of his Bar Mitzvah.

At times it appears as if there is something of a gender revolution taking place currently in fashion, particularly in the (inherently privileged) luxury fashion sector where designers like Gucci’s Alesandro Michele have begun dissolving ready-to-wear gender binaries.

However, it’s only when viewed in the context of the real lives of the marginalised LGBTQ New Yorkers who star in Suited that fashion’s ability to shape and transform identity becomes really, truly apparent.

Directed by Jason Benjamin, pictured above with Dunham and Konner at Sundance, Suited premieres June 20 on HBO.
