Last time Lena Dunham and the Met Gala hit the headlines together, it was because of some controversial comments she made about US footballer Odell Beckham Jr, who she sat next to at the 2016 event.

Flash forward a year, and it turns out the Girls creator and the Met still don’t mix.

According to Page Six, Lena was rushed from the glamorous event to the emergency room, due to recurring symptoms of endometriosis.

“She’s at home resting and doing well,” a source later told the Huffington Post. “As you know, she’s very public about her battles with endometriosis.”

Before she had to leave in a hurry, the 30-year-old did have time to snap some photos on the red carpet, where she wore an Elizabeth Kennedy gown.

Some wondered if Lena would be invited to this year’s Met Gala after she caused controversy with her comments about Beckham. In a piece published on her website Lenny Letter after last year’s party, in which she interviewed Amy Schumer, she revealed how uncomfortable she felt sitting near the American football pro.

“He looked at me and he determined I was not the shape of a woman by his standards,” Dunham wrote. “He was like, ‘That’s a marshmallow. That’s a child. That’s a dog.’ It wasn’t mean — he just seemed confused,” she continued.

“The vibe was very much like, ‘Do I want to f*ck it? Is it wearing a … yep, it’s wearing a tuxedo. I’m going to go back to my cell phone.’ It was like we were forced to be together, and he literally was scrolling Instagram rather than have to look at a woman in a bow tie. I was like, ‘This should be called the Metropolitan Museum of Getting Rejected by Athletes.'”

“I owe Odell Beckham Jr an apology,” she said later on Instagram.

“Despite my moments of bravado, I struggle at industry events (and in life) with the sense that I don’t rep a certain standard of beauty and so when I show up to the Met Ball surrounded by models and swan-like actresses it’s hard not to feel like a sack of flaming garbage.”

She said she now realised that she’d made “narcissistic assumptions about what he was thinking” and “projected these insecurities” onto the New York Giants star.
