Four costume changes aside, the real star of Lady Gaga’s Met Gala outfit was the lash. Breathing new meaning into CAMP, makeup artist Sarah Tanno completely outdid herself with one of the most spectacular set of lashes we’ve seen. Ever. There was gold foil, crystal tears, gilt fringing; it was a lesson in camp, served by its modern Queen (and Met Gala co-chair), Lady Gaga.

Even before its masterful appliqué of mile-long strips of gold, the eye look was impressive unto itself. Using Marc Jacobs Beauty, Tanno used a combination of black and frosty pink to define the eye with drama. “I used Highliner Gel Crayons on her eyes. Shade “Pink of me” in the waterline to exaggerate. I defined and lined the eyes with Blaquer and then went over with Magic Marc’er in Blaquer. Velvet Noir to coat the lashes before I apply the hand make lashes,” she revealed on Instagram. But then, of course, came the lashes.

Multi-layered and textural, the five-inch long lashes comprised spiky strips of prismatic gold leaf, shimmering fringing and crystal droplets which sat in a trio under the eye. “Researching Susan Sontag’s ‘Notes on Camp,’ the love of ‘things-being-what-they-are-not’ really resonated with me, so I wanted her lashes to be extremely exaggerated,” Tanno told Vogue US. And exaggerated they were. Falsies which rose to the occasion (a remarkable feat at fashion’s most extravagant night), the extraordinary eye look was complete with whirls of pink blush and fuchsia lips in the shade Flaming-Oh!

Another attendee at the Met Gala’s lash party was Gigi Hadid, who also knocked it out of the beauty ballpark with equally exceptional snow-white lashes which matched a frosty Michael Kors catsuit. Between Gaga’s fantastical fluttering falsies and Hadid’s whiteout spider lash, this year’s Met Gala was a beauty exercise in extra. Did someone say camp?
