Rare objects drawn from the Louis Vuitton archives and modern icons of design alike are the fascinating subjects of Time Capsule, a travelling exhibition coming soon to Melbourne that promises to shed new light on the historic French house and its rich history of innovation.

Time Capsule, which has previously been exhibited in Hong Kong, Bangkok, Berlin, Singapore, Dubai, is being staged in partnership with Melbourne’s Chadstone shopping centre, and through a comprehensive survey of archival objects it traces an unparalleled timeline of developments in both design and the technology of travel alike.

Beginning in 1854 and culminating in the present day – yes, there are pieces from the landmark Supreme collaboration included therein – Time Capsule takes its narrative cues from six themed rooms, beginning with an Artisans Room in which Louis Vuitton craftsmen will conduct a live experience. A Keys to the Codes room will deconstruct the house’s signature motifs and trace their development from the collections of incumbent creative director Nicolas Ghesquière all the way back to the house’s first trunks, created by its namesake founder in the mid-19th century.

In Journeys Around the World, you’ll be able to witness how developments in transportation impacted on the demands of the design process; likewise, a room Elegance in Motion will underscore how those demands were met with style in equal measure. In Icons of the House, some of the house’s most memorable creations revealed under the tenures of some of the most influential designers in recent memory in collaboration with creative iconoclasts will take centre stage: think pieces derived from the fertile genius of Frank Gehry, Rei Kawakubo, Cindy Sherman, Stephen Sprouse, Marc Newson, Takashi Murakami and Jeff Koons.

Finally, in Magic Malle, the iconic trunk receives its dues from its earliest iterations to those miniaturised versions that have found favour with the brand’s muses and ambassadors worldwide – Selena Gomez, Alicia Vikander, Ruth Negga, Miranda Kerr, Jennifer Connelly and Julianne Moore amongst them.

Time Capsule’s opening conveniently coincides with the city of Melbourne’s feverish embrace of fashion as part of the annual VAMFF festivities, which GRAZIA will be closing the curtain on with a runway show on March 10. More information on that is available here.

Time Capsule will exhibit free at Chadstone from February 24 until March 21, 2018. The exhibition will be open daily on the ground floor of the shopping centre. More information is available here.
