For both its instant-chic fix and antidote to summer frizz or simply as a stealth strategy for stretching out a shampoo one more day, the low bun is fast becoming the IT updo statement to add to your hair repertoire. Yet for all of its simplicity, there are a few key ingredients to elevate the look, and all you need to do it clock the slew of celebrities currently making a case for the day-to-night knot.

Jennifer Lawrence stepped out to honour Jodie Foster at the British Academy Britannia Awards over the weekend, her now creamy blonde lob tucked into a plaited bun at the nape of her neck. Only a few days earlier, Alessandra Ambrosio opted for a chic low twist on the same night that Pretty Little Liars actresses Lucy Hale and Ashley Benson snapped a selfie of their double low bun efforts (bonus points for the matching berry lips too)

The low bun look was out en masse during Spring/Summer 2017 fashion month too, both on the catwalk at Philosophy, and off on Karlie Koss, Taylor Hill and Kendall Jenner.

Working this AM-to-PM look to its full potential are Lily Aldridge and Gigi Hadid, both of who regularly twist their tresses on shopping trips, date nights and red carpets, alike. Worn slick, or customised via some eyebrow-grazing bangs or face-framing tendrils – personalisation is what takes this versatile knot to the next level.

Using a hair bungee in place of a regular hair elastic will offer adjustable tension, meaning a tighter hold sans bumps along the row. Texture spray will boost your roots as well as the longevity of the look.

Bobby pins are of course essential, but how you bun it is up to you. Opt for classic bun like Gigi; split your ponytail in two for a double-twist bun like Karlie and Alessandra; or plait your ponytail first like Jennifer for look that works as well on the morning coffee run as it does at after-work drinks.
