I am by no means an expert in men’s beauty. I live with a male who thinks soap counts as cleanser, and in my time as a beauty editor have interviewed perhaps one male for every ten females. But times are thankfully changing, and the realm of beauty for boys of all kinds is on the up and up, whether in relation to skin, hair, body or makeup.

Luka Sabbat is one such champion for the cause, using makeup as another outlet to express his ever-flowing creative prowess. In Miami this week, for instance, he attended the Dior Men’s Fall 2020 show with silver shadow worked artfully into his inner corners. It wasn’t a slick silver but more a dirty, chromatic shade that looked a little like oil on bitumen straight after a storm. It was effortless and it was cool. Also, it was beautiful to look at.

Extending the concept further was the show itself, where a handful of models walked with acidic green or yellow pigment airbrushed across the face. Makeup director Peter Phillips described it as “futuristic and colourful”, pointing towards Miami graffiti as a source of inspiration.

Skin was also a focus for Phillips, who used lightweight foundation to create an even base, and clear gel to fluff and straighten brows. In essence, the grooming was a secondary creative outlet, and an extension of the dynamic new collection.

It feels weird to me to label beauty for boys as a trend, because in truth it should be for anyone, anytime. But what’s great about the state of flux in beauty is that more people – like Luka – are happy to wear shadow or shade or colour and call it art; call it fun; call it whatever they want too, really. Boys and their (beauty) toys. Let’s hope we only see more.
