Victoria’s Secret 2018
Ballet workouts are having a total fashion moment. Just weeks ago, Maria Grazia Chiuri themed her Dior Spring Summer 2019 runway collection around the concept of modern dance, a professional troupe swirling around the models as they strode along the catwalk.
The pared-back ballet style aesthetic – and by that we mean the sleek, chic, black and skin-toned practice-wear preferred by professionals, not frou-frou performance tutus – has infiltrated the activewear space, and by default our Instagram feeds.
Always ahead of the functional, fashionable activewear game, global giant Lululemon has this week released a limited-edition collection of clothes made in collaboration with star of the Royal Ballet of London, Francesca Hayward.
Each of the 17 pieces in the lululemon x Francesca Hayward of The Royal Ballet collection boasts the with the same high-tech, high-function fabrics and design principles typical to the activewear brand, but with tweaks that reflect both the outfit needs of dancers and Hayward’s personal tastes.
For example, the workout leggings have a higher waist than usual and the waistband is embellished with stripes of gold thread, a favourite of the principal dancer’s and a nod to the gold décor in London’s Royal Opera House. The silhouettes reflect typical layers of a dancer’s warm-up wardrobe. Ultra-light cashmere jersey and silky knit pieces feel as beautiful as they look, ranging in price from $65 to $159 for accessories and apparel.
“I love how the collection feels strong but feminine in its shape, how the clothes feel against my skin, and how I am free to move and dance in them with no restrictions,” says Hayward.
