Gabriella Loyzaga Gibbs (Gabi for short) is no stranger to makeup looks that touch every part of the colour spectrum – sky blue shadow, watermelon lips, apricot-hued cheeks. As one half of the musical duo Gibbs (alongside her sister), her Instagram account is a combination of work and play, mixing clips of her music with posts that speak to her love (and skill) of bright, bold, glossy beauty. Her grid is storytelling through a hyper-visual lens, and makeup certainly occupies more than one chapter.

Having amassed a large following, Gabi is constantly searching for kindling to keep her creative candle burning, which is why Instagram’s Explore Feed is often her first port of call. It’s a hotbed of creativity, and the beauty tab in particular never fails to serve up a dizzying array of untapped looks, products, colour combinations, and finishes. Today’s search and scroll has led us down the path of #80smakeup: bold, saturated colours and glitter-fuelled products that aren’t for the faint of heart. Below, Gabi lets GRAZIA and artist @maxmade into her Explore Feed, where we get lost in a melange of hashtags and reference shots. The result? An 80s escapist fantasy, complete with bold purple, vinyl red, and lots of blush. See Gabi takeover our Madeup By Explore series below.

Throwback To The 80s

The hashtag #80smakeup was the starting point for Gabi when it came to dreaming up a look that was a little bit Madonna meets Euphoria. @nikki_makeup was responsible for the inception of contrasting shades of purple and pink painted on to the face. The rest of the brief was simple: #80s, #colour, #skin, and #boldbrows. We owe icons like Madonna, Grace Jones, and Cyndi Lauper for pioneering clashing colour, and choosing to the ignore the dichotomy of eye OR lip, and instead play up both. Now we have modern legends like makeup artist @patmcgrathreal, who isn’t afraid to be apply glitter and chromatic pigment in spades. Even the ever-poised Victoria Beckham has harped back to the golden days with her brand new beauty line, playing on the idea of electric blue shadow and very smudgy lips. Essentially, more is more by way of colour, texture, and gloss. To cap it all off, Gabi opted in for a red lip – a common feature on her grid – proving that when it comes to makeup inspiration, excessive, #retromakeup vibes are encouraged.
