A Malawi court has granted Madonna permission to adopt twin girls, Reuters reports.

The singer was in the courtroom in the African nation to hear the decision on her request to adopt four-year-olds Esther and Stella, who have been living in an orphanage for two years.

“Madonna has demonstrated over the years that she has passion for Malawi and her children and therefore the court was satisfied and could not stop the adoption of the twins,” Titus Mvalo, one Madonna’s lawyers, told Reuters.

The children will soon board a private jet with Madonna bound for their new home in New York.

Madonna already has an adopted son David Banda, 10, and daughter Mercy James, nine, from Malawi, as well as her biological children Lourdes and Rocco.

Malawi’s adoption laws are complicated, but the 58-year-old has previously explained why she wants to take custody of children from the impoverished nation.

“To see eight-year-olds in charge of households,” she told Oprah Winfrey in 2006.

“To see mothers dying with Kaposi’s sarcoma lesions all over their bodies. To see open sewages everywhere. To see what I saw. It is a state of emergency. As far as I’m concerned, the adoption laws have to be changed to suit that state of emergency,” she said.

“I think if everybody went there, they’d want to bring one of those children home with them and give them a better life.”

Madonna has been heavily involved in charity work in Malawi for over a decade, founding non-profit organisation Raising Malawi in 2006, which helps to improve the lives of the estimated one million orphans in the country.
