“Tonite’s look teaser. My Ruby slippers by @Prada,” wrote Marc Jacobs on his personal Instagram account. “We are off to see the VMAs. Following that brick road always!”

Instead of a humble yellow brick road, however, Jacobs followed the glamorous red carpet of the VMAs in a modern (and very spiffy) adaptation of Dorothy’s classic ruby slipper in The Wizard Of Oz. Drenched in sparkling rubies, the round-toe pump by Prada was entirely embellished in glinting red crystals and stacked with a considerable block-heel, the perfect shoe to accompany his wide-leg, floor-skimming slacks. The pants, which were also wide through the leg, were part of a stellar three-piece suit in pale khaki that had we attended, we too would likely have worn.

Riffing on the strong tailoring of the ’40s, the single button, retro-inspired suit was all kinds of sublime; exaggerated and pricked at the shoulder, sharp at the lapel, nipped at the waist, it was the perfect example of tailoring done right. The details beneath the jacket were equally superb; a matching waistcoat, crisp white shirt and satiny tie of the same hue. And with oversized suits and “men’s” tailoring having their moment in the sartorial sun, Marc Jacobs is further proof non-binary fashion is the way of the future.

As for those sparking ruby “slippers”, we’ll reserve them for red carpets – or yellow brick roads.
