Margot Robbie is going for gold in the new trailer for I,Tonya – awards season gold.

After a 30-second teaser for Robbie’s latest project dropped last month, the full trailer has now been released, giving the public an idea of what’s had critics raving about the Australian’s performance as former professional ice skater Tonya Harding.

The new look shows more of Tonya’s rough edges: in one scene she tells a competition judge who criticsed her “suck my d***”, in another she grabs a gun and tries to shoot her husband, who runs out of their house in terror.

It also depicts Harding’s abusive relationship with her mother, played by Allison Janney, who throws a knife at her daughter which sticks in her arm.

Margot has been the subject of awards season buzz for her portrayal of Harding in the dark comedy – reviewers from industry publications including Variety and Deadline have tipped her for a best actress nomination at the SAGs, Golden Globes and Oscars.

I, Tonya is a dark comedy based on true events of the 90s, when figure skating champion Nancy Kerrigan was attacked with a bat outside a Detroit skating rink.

Despite the injury – her right leg was bruised but not broken – she went on to compete at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Norway and won silver, while Harding came eighth.

It was subsequently revealed that Tonya’s now ex-husband and her bodyguard hired a hitman to attack Kerrigan, and that Tonya was aware of it and conspired with them.

Harding was later stripped of her medals and banned from the sport as a result.

I, Tonya is scheduled for an Australian release in February.
