We all have pop culture blind spots, the TV shows and movies we’ve never seen that invoke an incredulous response, followed by a directive: “But you HAVE to see it”.
Actors are not immune from such shaming. If anything, they’re under even more pressure than us ‘normal people’ to have seen every movie ever, cult or classic.
But Margot Robbie isn’t having it. A curious exchange unfolded between Robbie and Leonardo DiCaprio as they promoted Once Upon A Time In Hollywood this week.
“I remember when we did Wolf of Wall Street,” Margot said, “you [Leo] would get angry at me all the time anytime I mentioned any movie I haven’t seen.
“You would be like, ‘How have you not seen Citizen Kane? How can you work in this industry and not have seen Citizen Kane?’”
Robbie, 29, wasn’t copping the movie-shaming from Leo, and even managed to make a subtle jab at his age.
“I’m like, ‘I just got here to this industry, like, you’ve had more time to watch this stuff!’”
Because a young Robbie wasn’t a fool, though, she of course took his advice.
“Then I went home and I’d go watch Citizen Kane and watch all the movies he’s like, ‘You have to see this. You have to see this!’”
But her biggest big-screen blind spot of all is, well, big, and the Australian said whenever she tells people, it drives them crazy.
“I’ve never seen any Star Wars,” she admitted. “And I kind of don’t watch it now just because it infuriates people so much, like, ‘How? How have you never watched any, any Star Wars?’ And I just kind of wanna see how long I can make it now.”
