While Bohemian Rhapsody star Lucy Boyton took veiled inspiration from Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel Métiers d’Art 2019 runway for her SAG Awards eye makeup, Australian actress Margot Robbie was unapologetically literal.

The star, nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in Mary, Queen of Scots, Robbie stepped onto the red carpet wearing a white and gold column dress from the prestigious Chanel Pre-Fall collection.

Though it will have taken hundreds of artisan hours to hand-construct and would a cost a regular customer five figures to own, the macrame-like detailing conveyed a laid-back beach-bohemian tone.

Given Robbie’s current Australian golden girl status, the golden goddess-inspired column gown was an appropriate choice.

Gone were the golden cap, matching wrist cuffs and layered costume jewellery that accompanied Lagerfeld’s runway creation. Rather, Robbie was relatively minimalist, donning simple Chanel costume earrings, yellow-gold rings and simple beach-wave hair. Her sparkling gold eye makeup and nude lip by celebrity artist Pati Dubroff left her dress to do the talking.

It was a masterful example of less being more in the Hollywood awards show limelight. Clearly, there’s no gaudy excess left in this Gold Coast-raised girl.
