Earlier this year, while the international fashion shows were in full swing, there was a stand-out coat among the style set outside. Braving temperatures near zero in Paris, Milan and London, rather than accepting frost bite as a side effect of fashion, they were shockingly chic and snug thanks to the outerwear piece of the season: Max Mara’s ‘Teddy Bear’ coat.
Max Mara’s signature plush pea coat of the 80s was all but forgotten until current creative director Ian Griffiths rediscovered it during a delve into the label’s archive. The ‘Teddy Bear’ coat had been originally made from long-pile plush fabrics developed in German mills for crafting high end children’s toys, especially teddy bears. With the closure of these mills over time, the production of the fabric ceased along with the know-how of creating the coats.
So, working with an Italian fabric company, Griffiths developed a unique, modern version. His luxurious new-style faux-fur is specially woven using pure camel hair on a base of silk. The result is a deliciously opulent coat cut with nods to the fur overcoats of the 20s and 30s. Griffiths presented the coat within the FW17 collection and the now highly sought after piece has been seen on Rosie Huntington-Whitely, Elsa Hosk, Kim Kardashian-West, Rita Ora and Carine Roitfeld to name just a few.
The Max Mara ‘Teddy Bear’ is the Holy Grail of keeping warm while looking spectacularly stylish.
And fortunately, no teddies were harmed in the making…
